Boys Room Update

I’ve been working on this project for a couple months now and finally it’s ready to share! As it may be for you, my children’s room is a special place for the whole family. It is where we sing to our baby, cuddle my son, weep over hurt words, tickle each other until someone cries, and play for hours on end. It is where my sons are learning to share, and learning to love. The building blocks for lives (hopefully filled with empathy) have begun here in their 200 square ft shared bedroom. I want it’s appearance to resemble the importance of what goes inside. Thanks for being here and letting me open up the walls of our safe haven to show you. Also now that it’s ready, we are probably never leaving their room. I also have realized how much work I have to do on the rest of my house. Ah!

First of all, just look at these bunk beds from @flexausa. I actually first found these on Instagram before the new Flexa store opened in the Stanford Mall. Once I saw them in the store, I was sure. Now that they are in our home, I am even more into them. I absolutely love the quality, colors, and design. All of it. It’s nice that the beds are so spacious so I can sit in there with my children and talk or read books. The popsicle line is playful yet beautiful. My son tells all his friends that his blanket looks like a popsicle…and then invites them up to play.

He brings toys in the beds and pretends it is a house. He runs away and cries up there when he is sad or has done something wrong. I just love that these beds have become his comfort place. I’ve watched his confidence grow because he now has real “big boy bunk beds” and sleeps on the very top (where he could even touch the ceiling when he wants to—and you know he does!).

Flexa is a Danish company and has won multiple red dot awards, which is the most sought after distinction of quality and good design. The first ever store in the US is at the Stanford Shopping Center! You must go see but just be warned, your children won’t want to leave! You probably won’t want to leave without a stunning new purchase either.

These are twin size bunks. I love how spacious it is for me in there! We all just hang out in there together!

I found this ABC print from a local artist, Olga Akbarova. I love the greens and blues in it staged right next to the bunk beds. The colors are great together. My oldest son was born in San Francisco, our first hometown in the Bay Area. This print makes for a great conversation starter with him. It includes some of San Francisco’s landmarks and iconic buildings, faces, animals, food and activities in ABC order. So perfect for any child’s room in the Bay Area!

This wardrobe unit pictured below is a good ‘ol Ikea hack. I set this up when I was pregnant with my first baby 5 years ago! We have transferred this shelve/rod unit to 2 more homes since. I love how it frees up space in the closet for toys, books, and games storage. We just have one other dresser with clothes for the boys. It looks so nice…and well, I’ve spent a lot of time curating this wardrobe so I may as well show it off right?! Also, why is it so easy to buy clothes for my children and dress them up? Yet so hard for me to do the same. I was at a store the other day and at checkout I said, “Woah that shirt is so cute”. It must have been a go back or something like that. The lady was like, “Do you want it?” I said, “Yes I really do. But, I only buy things for my kids. One day I can.” Hahaha I’ve like never sounded so desperate.

So I’m not exactly sure where the original idea came from. I did this 5 years ago—but this shelf is a lack shelf from Ikea and it looks like this or this could work pretty great and turn out like mine. Don’t forget to invest in some nice wood hangers to really make the whole look.

Those cute alphabet blocks are from Modern Blocks. They are handmade and organic from my friend Jessie. She is so talented! They make such a cute gift too. You can get a custom name set too.

Here is a peak at the rest of the room. It’s all very gender neutral. Don’t you love that bright yellow chair? It’s from a local home consignment shop. My son’s favorite color is yellow. The brighter the better!

My baby is still in the crib but already trying to climb out sometimes. I hope to keep him in the crib for as long as possible but assume he will be in the bottom bunk within the next year.

We are obsessed with our new prints from this shop. I literally love everything in her shop. Swoon! The way you hang a print is important (to me ha!). For the earth print above the crib, I found this knob from Target and this wood poster frame from Amazon. I love the way it outlines the print and makes it stand out more.

The BlaBla shop has some beautiful and unique decor items. The items are all handmade in Peru. Here is our rainbow wall hanging and the sun pillow. These just make me so happy! I hung the wall hanging with a wall knob I purchased from Amazon because it is heavy and required something more heavy duty.

Thanks Rachael from Silverleaf Photography for capturing all the details of our room. It all turned out so well and I can’t stop staring at the photos if I’m not hanging out in there with my boys! This perfect garland pictured below is from the OrdinaryDutchStudio shop.

We love our Oeuf brand sparrow crib. I love how it turns into a toddler bed after also. We’ve had this for 5 years and it will last forever. We also purchased from Craigslist—so that tells you how high quality this is! Even I want to curl up in this for an afternoon nap!

My diaper bin is always stashed with Nest diapers, wipes, and Vitamin A+D cream. By the way, I’ve used desitin, aquaphor, and the Tubby todd diaper cream for diaper rashes. Those work for sure. However, nothing works as fast as the Vitamin A+D cream for my son. I just tried it one day and by the next morning the rash was gone. It works that fast every time. I always have a tube on hand now. It’s a nursery essential! My older son didn’t really get rashes and if he did it was so minor. This next baby definitely has more sensitive skin.

I love these mats from Wander & Roam. It is soft foam making it is so comfortable for me to be on the floor playing with them at their level. Super important! Being at their eye level shows them that you are willing to engage with them, it makes them feel safer, and helps them feel more in control. What a great way to connect with your child. I also have tailbone issues and I last longer down there now that I have these mats. My son didn’t like crawling on our hardwood floors even with some rugs around. He would do a version of the army crawl. Once we got these mats, he crawled on all 4’s all over them. I’m a huge fan. They have some super fun new prints out right now! Best part is, you literally just wipe clean. I am a bit of a clean freak, so I’m all about it. I love that it will never start stinking and won’t need to be replaced anytime soon.

And this is where we will be just soaking in our new space. It makes a HUGE difference. We are more happy inside now! I am thrilled with how it turned out.
